Why might you need to have a tooth extracted?

A tooth extraction is a procedure in which a tooth is removed from the mouth. There are many reasons why someone might need a tooth extracted. Some common reasons include:

  • NThe tooth is too damaged to be repaired
  • NThe tooth is overcrowded
  • NThe tooth is infected
  • NThe tooth is causing pain or discomfort

What you should expect
during and after a tooth extraction.

There are many steps involved in tooth extractions, depending on how your tooth is positioned in your mouth and the condition it is currently in. Our dental team will start by taking X-rays of your mouth in order to get an accurate picture of what needs to be done. This also helps us determine if any other teeth may need attention as well.

01

The first step

Once we have determined that a tooth extraction is necessary, we will numb the area around the tooth. This is done so that you will not feel any pain during the procedure. Next, the tooth will be removed. Once the tooth has been removed, the area will be cleaned and a gauze pad will be placed over the area to help stop any bleeding.

02

After your tooth has been extracted

After your tooth has been extracted, it is important to take care of the area where the tooth was removed. This includes:
– Brushing and flossing your teeth regularly
– Avoiding hard or crunchy foods
– Rinsing with salt water
– Applying ice to the area to reduce swelling

If there was any infection involved, the doctor may recommend antibiotics for a short time as well.
