Types of dental emergencies
and what to do for each

There are many different types of dental emergencies that can occur, and it’s important to know how to react in each situation. Some common examples include a toothache, broken or lost crowns or fillings, and knocked-out teeth. No matter what type of dental emergency you’re facing, our experienced team at Vander Vliet Dental Care will be here to help.

Toothache

With a toothache, the first thing you should do is rinse your mouth with warm water and floss to remove any food or debris that may be causing the pain. You can also try using a cold compress on the outside of your jaw to reduce swelling and discomfort. If these simple steps don’t provide relief, make an appointment with our office right away so we can examine your teeth and recommend further treatment if needed.

+

Lost or broken a crown or filling

If you’ve lost or broken a crown or filling, it’s important to take care of it as soon as possible. Brush around the affected area gently with water until you’re able to come into our office for an emergency appointment. If you still have the crown, store it in a safe, cool and dry place until your appointment and bring it with you. We’ll assess the damage and either repair or replace your crown or filling, depending on its condition.

+

Tooth knocked out

Finally, if you’ve had a tooth knocked out, time is of the essence. Dental emergencies like this require immediate attention from a dentist, so make sure you reach out to us as soon as possible. Rinse the tooth in warm water and make sure not to touch the root. Be sure to keep the tooth moist, ideally in a glass of milk, but if not, a glass with some of your saliva in it will work also. We’ll assess the damage and determine if your tooth is still viable for re-implantation. If so, we can often treat this type of emergency in just one visit – but even if your tooth is too severely damaged for re-implantation, we’ll work with you to find the best possible treatment plan.
