September is National Gum Care Month!
More than 75% of all adult Americans have some form of periodontal (gum) disease, a destructive infection that attacks and destroys the gum tissue, supporting connective fibers attaching gums to teeth, and underlying bone supporting the teeth. With gum disease now linked to larger health conditions like heart disease, diabetes, dementia, Alzheimer’s and rheumatoid arthritis, keeping your gums in excellent condition is critical for your overall well-being. If you are overdue for a cleaning and checkup, don’t wait any longer- call us today to schedule your next appointment.
Speaking of Gum Disease…
Researchers at NYU College of Dentistry have found evidence that periodontal disease may increase the risk of Alzheimer’s Disease. The NYU study offers fresh evidence that gingival inflammation may contribute to brain inflammation, neurodegeneration and Alzheimer’s. Just another reason to call us for that cleaning, or go ahead with the periodontal work that you may be postponing.
Grinding or Clenching at Night???
Stress isn’t just a mental burden- it manifests physically, and your mouth is often the first place it shows. Bruxism (teeth grinding and clenching) is one of the most common oral responses to chronic stress and anxiety. It usually happens unconsciously- either during sleep or while you’re focused or frustrated. Our office offers protection in the form of a nightguard, which is a hard plastic appliance that is custom fabricated to fit over your teeth. The nightguard protects your teeth from grinding and clenching at night. If this is something you think you need, or are interested in scheduling an appointment to have one made, please let us know!
Missing Something?
Did you know that 80% of adults in the USA have at least one missing tooth? (Not including wisdom teeth.) There are a few options for tooth replacement – bridge, removable partial denture or the ideal option – an implant. Interested in finding out more? Just call the office and we would be happy to answer your questions.
Fun Fact
On average, 34 million school hours are lost each year because of unplanned (emergency) dental care, and over $45 billion in US productivity is lost each year due to untreated dental disease.
