May is National Stroke Awareness Month
Oral health and strokes have a direct connection. One of the most significant risk factors for strokes is poor oral hygiene. Studies have shown that people with periodontal disease, or gum disease, have a higher risk of stroke. Periodontal disease is a serious infection of the gums and the surrounding tissue that can lead to tooth loss if left untreated. The infection is caused by bacteria that build up on the teeth and gums, and it can lead to inflammation and bleeding.
The connection between oral health and strokes is thought to be related to the inflammation caused by periodontal disease. Inflammation is a natural response to infection and injury, but chronic inflammation can lead to a host of health problems, including stroke. The inflammation caused by periodontal disease can lead to the formation of blood clots, which can then travel to the brain and cause a stroke.
