It’s Summertime… and the Livin’ is Easy…
Summer vacation is upon us! We will be closed from July 4th through July 14th and we will reopen on Monday July 15th. There will be a covering dentist during this time, so if you have an emergency that cannot wait until we return, their contact information will be on our voice mail.
Have a Bad Taste in your Mouth???
Poor oral hygiene or dental health issues such as cavities and gum disease can contribute to a lingering bad taste. Infection, inflammation, and abscesses may also be involved. Brush, floss, and use a mouth rinse every day to prevent dental problems. It is also important to schedule regular dental cleanings with your hygienist!
Another Reason to Love Peanut Butter…
Did you know that peanut butter, salmon or any other food rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) can help fight gum disease? New research shows people whose diets were rich in PUFAs were up to 20% less likely to have periodontitis. Periodontitis is a common inflammatory condition in which the gum tissue pulls away from the teeth, allowing bacteria to build up and potentially lead to bone and tooth loss.
About those Energy Drinks…
Yes it’s the summer and in the heat of things, your first choice for a refreshing beverage may be an energy or sports drink. A better idea would be to skip these teeth eroding drinks, mainly because they have little ability to buffer the acids in the beverage. Drinks like these are especially bad for adolescents and young adults, whose tooth enamel is less mature and more porous. Stick with plain water or unsweetened iced tea instead.
Fun Fact
Surprisingly, teeth are not bones. Bones and teeth are similar- they certainly look similar- as both contain nerves and blood vessels. Both are also primarily calcium. The difference is that bones produce marrow, while teeth do not.
